STANLEY RETURNS AS VOLCANOES MANAGER

Popular Fred Stanley, named the Northwest League’s Manager of the Year this past season, has been named by the San Francisco Giants to guide the Volcanoes again in 2001.

A veteran of 14 big league seasons, the 53-year old Stanley spent eight years with the New York Yankees, helping them win World Series titles in 1977 and ‘78. After retiring as a player in 1982, he moved into player development.

Before joining the Giants’ last year, Stanley spent nine years in the front office of the Milwaukee Brewers. He served as assistant general manager under Sal Bando from 1996-99.

This season, Salem-Keizer started slowly before rallying from a 16-25 record at the mid-point of the season. An August surge saw the Volcanoes win 11 of 13 games and move into a first place tie. The team finished the year 36-40.

WILSON & DECKER JOIN STAFF

Pitching coach Trevor Wilson and hitting coach Steve Decker, former teammates with San Francisco, will complete Stanley’s coaching staff.

Wilson, who lives near Oregon City, served as the Volcanoes pitching coach in 2000 while Decker, a Keizer resident during the off-season for the past eight years, was completing a 13-year playing career.

Wilson spent seven years with San Francisco, posting a record of 41-46. His finest season was in 1991 when he finished 13-11 with a 3.56 ERA and 139 strikeouts in 202 innings.

Decker was drafted by the Giants in 1988 and spent parts of four seasons with San Francisco (1990-1992, ‘96). A fine fielding catcher, he hit .221 with 13 home runs and 72 RBI in seven seasons in the majors. In the minors, he hit .304 with 104 HR and 572 RBI between 1988 and 2000
