"Best Ever" Coaching
Staff to be reunited for 3rd Season
The San Francisco
Giants have announced that coaches Jerry Cram and Ricky Ward will again
join Manager Steve Decker's staff for the 2007 season. It will be the
third consecutive season the trio has guided the Volcanoes. Over the past
two years, Salem-Keizer has a 100-52 record. Last year, the Volcanoes won
the Northwest League Championship, posting the highest winning percentage
in professional baseball (.724).
Cram, a 40-year
veteran of professional baseball as a player and coach, will begin his
fourth season as the Volcanoes pitching coach. Last summer, his staff
posted the lowest Earned Run Average in the NWL since 1990 (2.95) and
established franchise records for wins (55), ERA, most shutouts (8) and
saves (29), fewest runs allowed (260), fewest hits (557) and fewest walks
(206).
Ward, who played at
Salem's Chemeketa Community College and was a 10th round draft
choice of the Giants in 1989, serves as the Volcanoes infield coach while
also working on base running and bunting. In 2006, Salem-Keizer set a new
league record with a fielding percentage of .9770.
Decker was named
national Short Season Manager of the Year after the Volcanoes went 55-21
in 2006 and has earned league Manager of the Year honors in each of the
last two seasons. Trainer John Kotredes will return for his second season
with Salem-Keizer.
Former Volcanoes
manager Fred Stanley (2000-2002) will continue as the Giants' Coordinator
of Minor League Instruction. Shane Turner, S-K manager in 1997, will
serve as a roving instructor this summer. Former Salem-Keizer hitting
coach Bert Hunter will manage the Giants' Arizona Rookie League team for
the sixth consecutive season. Will Malerich, a relief pitcher for the
Volcanoes in 1997, returns as Hunter's pitching coach. Gary Davenport,
the Volcanoes' hitting coach in 2004, will again serve in that capacity
with the Norwich Navigators.

On the Road to the Show
Seven former Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have been listed among the San
Francisco Giants' Top 10 major league prospects in Baseball America's
annual rankings, released February 20. The Giants' combined minor league
teams, led by the Volcanoes and Augusta Greenjackets, had the highest
overall winning percentage (.557) in professional baseball last year after
finishing second in the same category (.555) in 2005.
Tim Lincecum, the All-American from the University of Washington, was
rated San Francisco's top individual prospect, followed by Jonathan
Sanchez who was with S-K in 2004 and will be given the chance to earn a
spot in the Giants' starting rotation in spring training. Other former
Volcanoes on the list include Emmanuel Burriss (#4), Kevin Frandsen (#6),
Fred Lewis (#7), Nate Schierholtz (#8) and Eddy Martinez-Esteve (#9).
Angel Villalona, a 16-year old third baseman from the Dominican Republic
who signed a club-record $2.1 million bonus last year, is ranked third.
Pitchers Brian Wilson (#5) and Billy Sadler (#10), who were college
teammates at LSU and drafted in 2003, complete the list.
About Lincecum, BA said:
"Lincecum throws a 91-96 mph fastball that tops
out at 98…he also has a true hammer curveball that breaks early and keeps
on breaking. Giants' scouts believe he might have the best curve of any
drafted player since Kerry Wood. Lincecum's combination of stuff and
deception makes him close to unhittable. He's incredibly strong for a
pitcher his size, and he reminds some old-timers of Bob Feller or a righthanded Sandy Koufax because of his delivery and flexibility. The
Giants say Lincecum will be a starter unless he proves he can't handle the
role.”
Jonathan Sanchez: "Sanchez profiles as a quality starter, but the Giants'
bullpen need was so acute that they moved him to short relief last year.
Sanchez's low-90's fastball is sneaky-fast and can hit 95 mph on
occasion. He partners it with a plus changeup that has fooled hitters at
every level. He carries himself with an air confidence and wasn't the
least bit intimidated against big leaguers. The Giants aren't sure if
Sanchez is ready to shoulder a full-season workload. His career high is
126 innings and he has trouble maintaining his velocity when he's used on
consecutive days.”
Emmanuel Burriss:
"A leadoff hitter in the mold of Luis Castillo, Burriss
plays the game with poise and polish. He makes excellent contact and is a
threat to reach base on anything in play. One club official called him
‘Jose Reyes with less power.' He has top-of-the-line speed, outstanding
range, soft hands and very good instincts. Burriss' arm grades a tick
below average, leading to some doubts that he'll stick at shortstop, but
his footwork is so good that he seldom fails to make plays. The Giants
will need a new shortstop soon to replace Omar Vizquel…that figures to be
Burriss.”
Kevin Frandsen: "Frandsen dedicated himself to making the big leagues to
honor his brother D. J. who lost a lifelong battle with cancer. Frandsen
has marvelous bat control and profiles as a solid No. 2 hitter. He puts
the ball in play consistently, uses the whole field and has occasional gap
power. His baseball IQ is off the charts and he has plus makeup and
maturity. He played shortstop and third base in Triple-A but his adequate
range and arm profile better at second base. Frandsen will apprentice
behind veteran second baseman Ray Durham in a utility role.”
Fred Lewis: "Lewis was a wide receiver in junior college and wasn't
serious about baseball until he transferred to Southern. His lack of
experience showed early in his career, but when he arrived as a major
league callup in September, Lewis went 3-3 as a pinch hitter and wowed the
big league staff with his athleticism. The best all-around athlete in the
system, Lewis does things on the basepaths that the Giants haven't seen
since Darren Lewis (no relation). He has the raw skills to hit .300 with
20-25 home runs and 30-40 steals. He is still more about potential than
production.”
Nate Schierholtz: "A surprise second-round pick in 2003, Schierholtz
looked like might fall into the trap of becoming a power hitter without a
position. He converted from third base to right field in late 2004 and
has worked hard on his defense. Schierholtz has a body-builder's physique
and tremendous power. He runs well for his size, looks to take the extra
base and always hustles. He has a strong outfield arm. He has a clean lefthanded swing, but there's some length to it and Schierholtz struggles
with plate discipline. He cut down on his strikeouts last season, but
doesn't walk nearly enough.”
Eddy Martinez-Esteve: "Drafted with San Francisco's first pick in 2004,
Martinez-Esteve hasn't been able to stay healthy. He was nagged by
injuries during his college career, and he has had elective surgeries on
his right shoulder and foot as a pro. Martinez-Esteve is the best pure
hitter in the system, with the ability to hit for average and power.
Coaches noted that his maturity improved last year and he lost almost 20
pounds. He's put more effort into improving his defensive skills although
his range, arm and instincts all rate below average in left field. First
base remains an option, but only if he's up for the challenge.”

Star Keeps on Shining
Led by first-round draft choice Tim Lincecum, 13 former Salem-Keizer
players have been extended non-roster invitations to San Francisco's Major
League Spring Training camp.
In addition to Lincecum, the 2006 Golden Spikes Award winner as college
baseball's top player, the list of former Volcanoes getting invites
includes pitchers Justin Hedrick, Matt Palmer and Ryan Meaux; catchers
Steve Holm, Todd Jennings, Justin Knoedler and Guillermo Rodriguez;
infielder Julio Cordido and outfielders Ben Copeland, Brian Horwitz, Eddy
Martinez-Esteve and Clay Timpner.
Horwitz won the NWL batting championship (.347) with S-K in 2004 and then
took the South Atlantic League hitting title in 2005. Timpner, the NWL's
top defensive outfielder in 2004, hit .293 for S-K, batted .291 for San
Jose's California League Champions in 2005 and jumped to AAA Fresno in
2006 and hit .286 for the Grizzlies.
Fourteen former Volcanoes are on the Giants' current 40-man roster. The
list includes pitchers Kevin Correia, Brad Hennessey, Noah Lowry, Pat
Misch, Scott Munter, Jonathan Sanchez and Jack Taschner; infielder Kevin
Frandsen, first basemen Travis Ishikawa and Lance Niekro, and outfielders
Jason Ellison, Fred Lewis, Dan Ortmeier and Nate Schierholtz.
On January 26, the Giants announced the release of nine players including
former Volcanoes Buck Cody, James Garcia, Adam Gardner, Anthony Pannone
and Jose Yens. All but Yens were pitchers.

Things are shaping up to
be another Volcanic Season
With six of the first 59 selections in June's Major League Baseball Draft,
the San Francisco Giants are positioned to send some of the country's
finest young players to Salem-Keizer this summer. The Giants have three
first round selections (#'s 10, 22 and 29) and three supplemental
first-round picks (34, 51 and 59), giving them the strongest position in
the draft. The additional picks come as the result of losing "Type A"free agents Jason Schmidt (to Los Angeles) and Moises Alou (to the NY
Mets) and "Type B"free agent Mike Stanton (to Cincinnati).
The only comparable season when the Giants enjoyed such draft day riches
was 1998, when San Francisco had three first round selections, two
supplemental picks and two second round choices. With seven of the first
72 selections, the Giants chose Tony Torcato (#19 overall), Nate Bump,
Scoop McDowell, Chris Jones, Jeff Urban, Sammy Serrano and Chris Magruder.
Those players helped Salem-Keizer to the first of its three NWL
Championships.
In 2001, the Giants had two first round choices (Brad Hennessey and Noah
Lowry), drafted Todd Linden with a supplemental pick and tabbed Jesse
Foppert with their selection in round two. All but Linden, who signed
late and didn't play until 2002, were part of Salem-Keizer's Championship
club.
Last season, 19 of San Francisco's first 22 draft choices played for the
Volcanoes.
Here's the year-by-year summary of the Giants first 20 selections who have
played for S-K.
