The On-Deck Circle
The Official
Newsletter of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes
Volume 10, Issue 4 - August, 2007
Welcome!
After Salem-Keizer won the NWL Championship in 2006 with a record of
55-21, no one expected the Volcanoes (or anyone else) to challenge that
mark this summer. Now, that record is in jeopardy. Mid-way through the
season, the Volcanoes are 30-8, have the best record in Minor League
Baseball and have opened a five-game lead in the Western Division. Can
history repeat itself? We're about to find out.

On a record-setting Pace
With a record-setting
start to the 2007 season, the defending champion Salem-Keizer Volcanoes
have reached the campaign's mid-point with a 30-8 mark and a five-game
lead over the Eugene Emeralds (25-13). The Volcanoes opened the season by
sweeping a five-game series in Boise and later swept series against
Tri-City (7/2-7/6) and Vancouver (7/11-7/13). Salem-Keizer won 30 of its
first 36 games and didn't lose consecutive games until July 26-27.
Under Steve Decker,
National Short Season Manager of the Year in 2006, the Volcanoes lead the
league in hitting (.281) and fielding (.971) and are second in pitching
(3.30). Salem-Keizer is 20-2 when scoring first and has lost only once
when leading after 5 innings.
After going 9-3 in
June, the Volcanoes won their first eight games in July, getting solid
hitting from a balanced lineup that features five players hitting better
than .290 and brilliant relief pitching. In the first 18 games in July,
the Volcanoes were 16-2 and outscored opponents 103-39. During that span,
the team's starting pitchers worked 79 innings, allowed 67 hits and had a
2.28 Earned Run Average. The Volcanoes' bullpen worked a combined 82
innings, allowed 48 hits and had an ERA of 1.32. Combined, the staff ERA
over those 18 games was 1.79.
The Volcanoes
certainly expect to be challenged in the second half. They'll play Eugene
11 times in the final 38 games, including a six-game home-and-home series
to end the season (8/31-9/5). The Ems make their first appearance at
Volcanoes Stadium, July 31-August 2. Salem-Keizer will host the Eastern
Division leading Boise Hawks in a five-game series, August 8-12.

Great schedule remains
The Volcanoes sixth
annual Cancer Awareness recognition and celebration will be held August
10-12 when Salem-Keizer hosts Eugene. The event-expanded to three days
for the second straight year-will begin with a fireworks show following
Friday night's game. Saturday's game (which will start at 5:05 p.m.) will
be followed by a concert and dance featuring the Northwest's most popular
50's and 60's oldies band, Johnny Limbo & the Lugnuts on the Stadium's
new entertainment stage. The cancer survivor celebration will be held on
the field prior to Sunday's game at 5:05.
The Volcanoes' first
Cancer Awareness Night was initiated by Lisa Walker in 2002 after her own
experience with breast cancer. Each year, with the support of Dr. Bud
Pierce and Hematology-Oncology of Salem, the event has grown larger. In
2006, nearly 300 cancer survivors joined Lisa and the Salem-Keizer players
on the field.
The Volcanoes will
have two additional Friday Fireworks shows in August, the first presented
by Spirit Mt. Casino, August 17 and the second presented by Skyline Ford,
August 31. Three annual community outreach drives will also be held
during the month. On Wednesday, August 2, fans are encouraged to bring a
new toy, book or game to the Stadium as part of Crater's Birthday Party.
Items collected will be given to local agencies to benefit needy area
youngsters during the coming holiday season.
On Monday, August 27,
the Volcanoes and Bi-Mart will collect basic school supplies to assist the
Homeless Children Education Program. More than 1,600 youngsters are
supported by this initiative. Friday, August 31, is the team's annual
Food Drive with Marion/Polk Food Share. Fans bringing three or more
canned goods or non-perishable food items will receive a free baseball
when they attend that night's game with Eugene.
A complete
August-September schedule of games and events can be found later in this
newsletter.

Here to throw out 1st pitch
and sign autographs
"The outlook was
uncertain for the Beaver Nine that day.
The PAC-10 race was
ending; just ahead: U-C-L-A.
But when the dust had
lifted, and the Beavs took two of three,
They were headed back
to Omaha and the land of baseball dreams."
Pat Casey, who led
Oregon State to its second consecutive College World Series championship,
will be the honored guest at Volcanoes Stadium, Tuesday, July 31st
when Salem-Keizer meets Eugene at 6:35. Casey will throw out the
ceremonial first pitch and sign autographs for fans that evening.
After winning their
final 10 games and leading the Beavers to a perfect 5-0 record in the CWS,
Casey was named National Coach of the Year for the second straight year by
Collegiate Baseball newspaper. He is the second coach to win the honor in
consecutive seasons. OSU was 50-18 in 2006 and 49-18 this season. In 13
years at Oregon State, Casey's record is 440-271 (.619).
After losing seven
position players, his top two starters (Dallas Buck and Jonah Nickerson)
and his All-American closer (Kevin Gunderson) from the 2006 National
Championship team, Casey's club defied the odds by returning to Omaha and
winning back-to-back titles. The Beavers accomplished this despite a
sixth place finish in the PAC-10 (10-14) after claiming Conference titles
in 2005 and 2006. They were the last school selected for the 64-team
tournament field. After winning the NCAA Regional in Charlottesville, VA,
Oregon State defeated Michigan, 2-0, in the Super Regionals before running
the table in Omaha, recording victories over Cal St. Fullerton (3-2),
Arizona State (12-6), UC Irvine (7-1) and North Carolina (11-4, 9-3).

Long awaited pair coming back to Oregon

Oregon State teammates
Daniel Turpen and Joe Paterson-the San Francisco Giants 8th and
10th round selections in the 2007 draft-have joined the
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. By coincidence, the McMinnville residents and
former teammates at McMinnville High School will make their home debut on
Beavers' Baseball Night, July 31, when OSU Head Coach Pat Casey will be
the team's honored guest (see earlier story).
Both pitchers had
outstanding seasons at Oregon State. Paterson pitched in relief in all
five games of the College World Series and was named the Most Outstanding
Player at the 2007 Charlottesville Regional with two wins and a save while
allowing one run in 12.2 innings. For the season, he was 10-6 with a 3.61
ERA in 26 games. Turpen defeated UC Irvine, 7-1, in the CWS, allowing
only five hits and one run in 8 innings. He was 10-1, 3.44 in 23 games
for the Beavers this spring.
With the announcement
of nine additional signings-including Turpen and Paterson-the Giants have
now signed 40 players from the 2007 First-Year Player Draft including 22
of their first 24 picks. Heading the list of new signings is pitcher Tim
Alderson (1st round, 22nd overall selection).
Alderson was considered to have the best command of any prep hurler in the
country. Pitching for Horizon High School in Scottsdale, AZ, he had a
perfect 12-0 record with a 1.05 ERA and struck out 111 batters while
walking only four in 73 innings.
The Giants have yet to
sign three players from the first 25 rounds of the draft: first round
selections Madison Bumgarner and Wendell Fairley and 23rd round
pick Drew Bowlin.
Here is the complete
list of San Francisco selections through the first 25 rounds of the
draft. Players in BOLD (17) have played for Salem-Keizer.

Reviewing
the NWL's best of the last decade
With their
record-setting first half, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have posted the best
record in NWL history at the mid-point of the season. Three Boise
teams (1997, '98 and 2001) had 27-11 records after 38 games. Salem-Keizer was
25-13 halfway through last season and went 30-8 over the final 38 games on
the way to a 55-21 record, the league's best since adopting the 76-game
schedule.
The Volcanoes
extraordinary start has prompted dozens of questions about how this team's
record compared to the best in league history. Listed below are the
circuit's top marks at key "mileposts" since the Volcanoes inaugural
season in 1997, along with Salem-Keizer's record at the same point.
20 Games:
Spokane 1997 16- 4 Volcanoes 2007 17-
3
30 Games:
Boise 1997 23- 7 Volcanoes 2007
25- 5
Vancouver 2005 23- 7
38 Games:
Boise 1997, '98, 01 27-11 Volcanoes 2007 30- 8
40 Games: Boise
1997, 2001 29-11
50 Games:
Boise 1997 34-16
60 Games:
Salem-Keizer 2006 42-18
70 Games:
Salem-Keizer 2006 52-18
The best regular
season record in league history was posted by the 1982 Medford A's (53-17,
.757), who were then defeated by the Salem Angels in the NWL Championship
Series. Medford's records at the "splits" were 15-5, 22-8, 30-10, 37-13
and 45-15.

Volcanoes Stadium Really
is "Where Giant Dreams Begin"
It took Guillermo Rodriguez 11 years-including three stops in
Salem-Keizer-to reach the Major Leagues, but the 29-year old catcher
realized his lifetime dream on June 13 when he made his big league debut
with the San Francisco Giants. In his first game, he went 1-3 with two
RBI's against Toronto.
Rodriguez' professional journey from Barquisimeto, Venezuela began in
Bellingham in 1996, when he was 18. He played three games and failed to
get a hit. With Salem-Keizer in 1997, he batted .231 in 11 games. He
spent most of the '98 season in the Venezuela Summer League but played one
game with the Volcanoes and one with San Jose. In 1999, Guillermo joined
S-K in July after hitting .290 in 41 games at Bakersfield. In 33 games
with the Volcanoes, he hit .254 with 6 home runs and 34 RBI's while
stabilizing a young pitching staff with his work behind the plate.
In 2002, Rodriguez finally reached Triple-A, batting .235 in 32 games for
Fresno while also playing for San Jose (.362 in 42 games) and Shreveport
(.268 in 13 games). He spent 2003 in Fresno (.276, 5, 36 in 78 games) and
became a free agent at the end of the season. Signing with Detroit, he
hit just .187 in 73 games for Toledo and returned to the Giants in 2005,
spending most of the year in the California League with San Jose. He
began this season in Fresno and was called up when Eliezer Alfonzo
suffered a serious knee injury in a home-plate collision in June. In 14
games through July 26, Rodriguez was batting .267 (8-30) with 8 runs
batted in.
Nate Schierholtz, who hit .306 for the Volcanoes in 2003, made his Major
League debut June 11 as a defensive replacement. He got his first start
against Toronto, June 12, and went 1-4. The Giants returned him to Fresno
in early July after a 14-game trial but certainly liked what they saw.
The 23-year old outfielder batted .325 (13-40) with a double, triple and 3
RBI's. With Fresno, Schierholtz is hitting .333, 10, 48 in 78 games and
ranks fifth in the Pacific Coast League in batting.
Schierholtz and Rodriguez are the 40th and 41st
former Volcanoes to reach the Major Leagues.

Did you see Roof Man during the game on Thursday, July 26? Roof Man
made a spectacular debut and was a Huge Hit with fans. Ever wonder
what happens to all the foul balls that land on the Stadium roof ?
Well, we finally figured it out -- Roof Man has been getting them. He
was recently 'caught in the act', and he has now agreed to start
tossing the balls back to fans. He did so, to a thunderous ovation,
during the July 26 game -- in addition he launched T-shirts to the
delight of fans. Look for Roof Man to make a return appearance next homestand !!
A large event is being planned for Volcanoes Stadium during the
off-season. Rosary Bowl NW will be held at Volcanoes Stadium on
Saturday, October 6. A similar event was held in May at the Rose Bowl
in Pasadena, California, and drew nearly 50,000 people. The Rosary
Bowl NW will feature guest reflections by Pat Casey, Head Coach for the OSU National Championship Baseball team and Alberto Salazar, two time
Olympian and marathon runners, live Christian music by Donna Cori Gibson
and Michael John Poirier, community resource tables, Prayer of the
