The On-Deck Circle
The Official
Newsletter of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes
Volume 10, Issue 2 - April, 2007
Welcome! On
March 25, a glorious Sunday morning in Arizona, the 2006 Salem-Keizer
Volcanoes gathered as a team for the last time to receive their
Championship Rings. In a ceremony attended by more than 120
players in San Francisco's minor league system (two-thirds of them
former Volcanoes), Salem-Keizer co-owners Bill Tucker and Jerry Walker,
manager Steve Decker and pitching coach Jerry Cram joined Bobby Evans,
the Giants' Director of Player Personnel, to present the rings to each
player individually. It was a perfect closing act to a memorable,
record-setting season. Let the new season begin!

Their going, going,
go.... Order yours now before it's too late!
Ticket sales for the
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 2007 season are running 10 per cent ahead of last
year in the wake of the team's championship season and anticipation of
another strong club this summer as San Francisco will have six of the
first 59 selections in the June player draft.
The Volcanoes
attractive home schedule again will include six fireworks shows, a strong
lineup of special events and attractions and a nationally recognized
series of community outreach events. Yet, with ticket sales approaching
70,000, the Volcanoes have excellent seating available in every category
including lower level, box seat season tickets. The 5-, 10- and 19-game
ticket packages continue to be popular with fans while the new three-game
'Victory Plan" has been an immediate success.
The Victory Plan gives
fans a reserved seat for three games (June 17, July 4 and July 22). If
Salem-Keizer wins all three, fans purchasing the package will receive a
free complimentary ticket to the Volcanoes game with Vancouver on
Saturday, August 18. The plan includes Volcanoes games on Father's Day,
the Fourth of July and the team's annual "Turn Back the Clock" game.
Total cost for the three-game package is $27.
This year's five-game
"Best Games" plan includes Opening Night (6/24), Fireworks Friday (7/13),
Crater's Birthday Party and Lapel Pin giveaway (August 1), Motorcycle
Night (8/19) and Fan Appreciation Fireworks Night (8/31).
The 10-game package
again gives fans the opportunity to see every team in the league. Games
include Opening Night, 6/24 and 6/28 vs. Spokane; Fireworks Friday, 7/6
vs. Tri-City; San Francisco Giants Night, 7/14 vs.
Everett; Christmas in July, 7/24 vs. Yakima; Parrotthead/Hawaiian Night,
8/2 vs. Eugene; Kids' Night, 8/8 vs. Boise; Fireworks Friday, 8/17 vs.
Vancouver; Patriotic Night, 8/25 vs. Everett and Farewell Night, the final
home game of the regular season, 9/2 vs. Eugene.
Sales of group nights
have also been brisk and groups and organizations interested in booking an
evening at the Stadium should contact Greg Herbst, the Volcanoes Director
of Group Ticketing, as soon as possible to reserve their evening,
especially if they want to come on a Fireworks Friday.

"Where Giant Dreams Begin"
Continues
Led by starting pitcher Noah Lowry, seven former Salem-Keizer Volcanoes
earned spots on the San Francisco Giants Opening Day roster. Four
relievers-Kevin Correia, Brad Hennessey, Jonathan Sanchez and Jack
Taschner-plus first baseman Lance Niekro and utility infielder Kevin
Frandsen were named to the club's 25-man roster prior to the season opener
against San Diego, April 3.
Lowry, who led the Giants in wins, innings pitched, ERA and strikeouts in
2005, suffered a strained oblique muscle in his right side in his first
start last season and battled injury and ailments the rest of the year.
He finished the 2006 campaign with a 7-10 record, a 4.74 ERA and 84
strikeouts, well off his 2005 pace when he was 13-13 with a 3.78 ERA and
172 strikeouts.
Correia begins his fifth season with San Francisco after completing his
first full campaign with the Giants in 2006. Working in 48 games out of
the bullpen, the fourth round draft choice in 2002, was 2-0 with a fine
3.49 ERA last year, striking out 57 batters in 69.2 innings. Hennessey,
one of the Giants' two first round picks in 2001 (Lowry was the other),
was 5-6, 4.26 in 34 games (12 starts) for San Francisco last season. He
was a candidate for the fifth starting spot in the rotation this spring,
but moved to long relief when the slot was given to Russ Ortiz.
Sanchez made his Major League debut with the Giants last May 28, less than
two years after he was a 27th round draft choice out of Ohio
Dominican. He did not allow a run in his first 13 outings with the Giants
and finished the season with a 3-1 record and 4.95 ERA in 27 games
including four starts. Taschner had a sensational debut with SF in 2005,
posting a 2-0 record and 1.59 ERA in 24 relief appearances after being
called up from Fresno where he'd gone 3-0, 1.64 with 10 saves in 44
games. Last year was a different story. He gave up nine runs in his
first six appearances and was sent to Fresno, April 20. He went 6-7,
3.65, and 14 saves with the Grizzlies, returning to the Giants in
mid-August and finishing the year with an 0-1 record and 8.38 ERA.
Though Niekro was
San Francisco's starting first basemen when the 2006 season began,
insiders considered him a long shot to make the club this spring. During
the off-season, the Giants added veterans Rich Aurilia and Ryan Klesko and
already had veteran Mark Sweeney on their roster. In Spring Training,
Niekro posted impressive numbers to salvage the final roster spot. The
versatile Frandsen-who can play second, short, third or the outfield-is
generally regarded as the Giants "second baseman of the future." He
earned his spot on the roster after hitting .307 at Fresno last summer and
then batting .388 in the Arizona Fall League.

"Changes"
Jason Ellison, the hustling outfielder who earned All-Star honors with
Salem-Keizer in 2000 and later became one of
the most popular players in
Fresno history, was traded to Seattle by San Francisco for left-handed
pitcher Travis Blackley, April 1.
Ellison, who attended high school at South Kitsap (WA) and lives in the
greater Seattle area, will be a reserve outfielder, the same role he had
with the Giants during parts of four seasons (2003-2006). His best season
with San Francisco was in 2005 when he hit .264 in 131 games with four
home runs and 24 RBI's. However, his playing time diminished following
the Giants' acquisition of Randy Winn in 2005 (and Steve Finley in 2006),
and he had just 81 at bats in 84 games last year. On July 14, he was sent
to Fresno where he hit .406 in 46 games before returning to the Giants in
September.
Ellison was caught in a 'numbers crunch" with the Giants. Both Jason and
Lance Niekro were out of minor league options and were competing with
veteran Mark Sweeney for the last spot on the Giants 25-man Opening Day
roster. Had either Jason or Lance been sent to Fresno, they could have
been claimed by any other major league club. Niekro, who had an excellent
spring, earned the spot while Sweeney was placed on the 15-day disabled
list.
At the same time,
the Giants were welcoming back Jesse Foppert who they had traded to
Seattle (with catcher Yorvit Torrealba) for Winn in 2005. Foppert, who
was 8-1, 1.93 for the Volcanoes' 2001 Championship Team and later named to
the Northwest League's 50th Anniversary All-Star Team, has
battled arm problems since having Tommy John surgery in September, 2003.
He has pitched only 113 innings over the past three years and was on the
disabled list from May 22 through the end of last season with a right
elbow strain. He was released by Seattle on March 18 and joined the
Giants in Spring Training the following week.

Continuing "The Best Team Ever" Tradition
With two Northwest
League titles and an average of 44 wins over the last seven years,
Salem-Keizer is leading a close race with Boise as the league's best team
over the first decade of the 21st Century. The Volcanoes
308-224 (.579) record from 2000-06 gives them 19 more wins than the Hawks
(289-242, .544). Salem-Keizer, Boise and Spokane (243-289, .457) each has
won two pennants in the last six years. Yakima won the NWL title in 2000.
A review of last 10
years finds the Volcanoes and Hawks separated by just two wins.
Salem-Keizer had a record of 428-332 (.563) from 1997-2006 while Boise was
430-329 (.567). Over that span, the Volcanoes won four division titles
and three NWL Championships. The Hawks won six division flags but have
lost in four of six trips to the Championship Series, three of those to
Salem-Keizer. The Volcanoes have finished in first place four times, in
second place twice and were third on four occasions. S-K has never
finished in the cellar, the only NWL team that has escaped at least one
year in last place.
With three pennants in
five years, Yakima was the league's Team of the Decade in the 1950's after
the circuit began in 1955. The Bears and Tri-City each had three
championship teams in the 1960's while Lewiston had a trio in the 70's.
Spokane won consecutive titles in 1987, '88 and '89 (and another in 1990)
while Boise was the league's top team in the 90's with four flags from
1991-1995.

third Sunday's each month, from 10am to 2pm, the parking lot is
transformed into a Swap Meet. An array of different vendors featuring
new and used merchandise, antiques and collectibles, arts and crafts.
In addition to the Swap Meet, a special section is provided for For Sale

Many of our former Volcanoes are off to a terrific start. The Augusta
GreenJackets, the Giants' Class A long-season affiliate, opened the year
with twelve consecutive wins and are 13-1 to start the season. The
GreenJackets roster is full of former Volcanoes many of which played for
our Championship team last season. In addition many of 'our' players
are with the San Jose Giants, and they are off to a 10-3 start to open
their California League season. We wish them all continued success.
Many new sponsors have joined the Volcanoes this year, we welcome: Blue
Diamond, Covanta Marion, Hertz Car Sales, Party City, Salem Vascular
Consultants, Spinnaker Pediatric, Nickel Ads, and Oregon Rain.
Father's Day Game with the Volcanoes
Just 60 days until the Volcanoes take the field for the first time at
home on Father's Day, June 17. This will be a great opportunity to

38 Volcanoes have now made
it to the bigs!
On Saturday, April 7, former Volcanoes center fielder Jon Coutlangus
completed an improbable journey to the big leagues when he made his Major
League debut with the Cincinnati Reds as a pitcher. Coutlangus worked 2/3
of an inning in relief, retiring the two batters he faced, as the Reds
defeated Pittsburgh, 9-7, in a game where the temperature was 30 degrees.
Jon came back and pitched the 9th inning—allowing a solo HR to
Jason Bay—in a 6-3 loss on Easter Sunday.
Coutlangus hit .301 in 51 games for S-K in 2003 after a fine career at
South Carolina; but, after a disappointing 2004 campaign when he batted
.194 in 71 games at Hagerstown, he asked to convert to pitching. In 2005,
he was 4-0, 3.04 in 50 games at San Jose and was picked up by the Reds
prior to the 2006 season. The left-hander went 1-3, 2.86 with nine saves
in 49 games for Chattanooga in the Southern League before closing the
season with two appearances for Triple-A Louisville.
Since Joe Nathan made his big league debut with the Giants in 1999, 38
Salem-Keizer alumni have played in the majors. Fourteen former Volcanoes
begin this season on big league rosters including seven with the San
Francisco (see earlier story). The seven remaining players are pitchers,
three with the Minnesota Twins: All-Star closer Joe Nathan, Boof Bonser
and last year's rookie sensation Francisco Liriano (12-3, 2.16) who may
miss the entire season following elbow surgery, San Diego's Clay Hensley
and Scott Linebrink, Washington's Jerome Williams and Coutlangus. Ryan
Vogelsong is playing with the Hanshin Tigers in Osaka, Japan after
splitting last season between Pittsburgh and the Pirates' Triple-A farm
team in Indianapolis.
Here’s the Major
League List.
Cincinnati: Jon Coutlangus
Minnesota: Joe Nathan, Boof Bonser, Francisco Liriano (DL)
San Diego: Clay Hensley, Scott Linebrink
Washington: Jerome Williams
The Minor League List:
Atlanta: Richmond (AAA) Doug Clark
Baltimore: Norfolk (AAA) Brian Burres Bowie
(AA) Pete Maestrales
Houston: Round Rock (AAA) Cody Ransom
Minnesota: New Britain (AA) Jesse Floyd
Oakland: Sacramento (AAA) Erasmo Ramirez
San Diego: Portland (AAA) Adam Shabala
